Accessible Pods for the NY Wheel
Project Background:
The New York Wheel project was proposed by New York Wheel LLC in response to the New York City Economic Development Corp’s request for bids for projects that would increase economic growth, boost tourism, and create jobs on Staten Island. The first of its kind in the region, the 630 foot tall observation wheel will encourage visitors and residents riding the nearby Staten Island Ferry to spend time exploring the surrounding area of St. George on the New York Harbor. The construction of the Wheel itself will increase employment opportunities in the local area, creating approximately 350 construction jobs and 600 permanents jobs.
Following its projected opening date in early 2018, the NY Wheel is estimated to attract over 3.5 million visitors each year. The project site also contains a green roof with five acres of public space and a terminal building with dining, shopping, and event space. Offering staggering views of the New York City Skyline, Statue of Liberty, and Verrazano Bridge, the New York Wheel promises to become one of the city’s great landmark attractions.
Project Services:
Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) worked closely with the team from Mammoet-Starneth to provide ADA consulting services for each passenger pod of the wheel, including plan review during the design stage and design assistance on assistive listening systems and accessible two-way emergency communication devices, among other technical issues. Each pod holds up to 40 guests in a climate controlled environment; with certain pods offering fine dining options and customizable spaces for special events, among other amenities.
