Overview:

It is a common misconception that buildings which predate the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) are “grandfathered” from compliance; however it is important to understand that there are no blanket exemptions. This session will highlight requirements under Title III of the ADA that apply when altering existing and historic commercial projects such as restaurants, museums, libraries, retail shops, etc. Obligations to remove barriers to accessibility will be addressed, including steps to entrances, inaccessible restrooms, and lack of access to goods and services.

The course PowerPoint slides will include images of real-world projects; as well as examples of sites which require barrier removal under the ADA. The presenter will draw from a wealth of experience in the field to walk audience through various

  • Know the ADA requirements that apply to Title III new and existing projects;
  • Understand alteration requirements and barrier removal obligations under the ADA;
  • Understand obligations of Historic Preservation laws;
  • Be able to apply information learned when surveying real-world projects

Presenter:
Mark Jackson is a Senior Accessibility Consultant at Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA), where he manages the commercial building project portfolio for the Accessibility Compliance and Consulting Group. Jackson is an International Code Council (ICC)-Certified Accessibility Inspector/Plans Examiner with specialized expertise in the accessible design and construction requirements of federal, state and local laws, and building codes including the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). He is an adjunct instructor at New York University and the Pratt Institute, New York, NY.
