Peter A. Stratton, Managing Director, Accessibility Services, developed and oversees SWA’s accessibility consulting business sector, providing leadership to a team of professionals based in SWA’s New York, NY; Norwalk, CT; Washington, DC; and Boston, MA, offices.
Under his leadership, the accessibility consulting team provides services to help ensure compliance with the accessible design and construction requirements of federal, state, and local laws and building codes, including plan reviews, field inspections, and technical assistance, among others. Peter provides litigation consulting to public and private clients cited for alleged non-compliance with legal mandates for accessible design and construction. Public clients include two of the top five largest housing authorities and the largest shelter system in the U.S.; private clients include large owners and real estate investments trusts with portfolios that collectively make up the majority of multifamily housing developed in the U.S. in any year.
Peter continues to drive the intrinsic connection between the green building movement and accessibility; he wrote the Design for Accessibility pilot credit for the LEED rating system and was a key collaborator on the development of two Inclusive Design pilot credits for both residential and commercial projects for the LEED rating system. He is the author of A Basic Guide to Fair Housing Accessibility – Everything Architects and Builders Need to Know about the Fair Housing Act Accessibility Guidelines, published by John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
Stratton was formerly an adjunct instructor at New York University, New York Institute of Technology, and the Pratt Institute, where he developed and taught courses on accessible design and construction to practicing and future industry professionals.
