SWA Joins Boston Climatetech Incubator Greentown Labs

Greentown Labs in Somerville, MA.September 2022 | Boston – We are proud to announce that Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) has established a new office at Boston-based climatetech incubator, Greentown Labs. SWA’s growing roster of local energy, sustainability, and accessibility consultants will now be based out of their flagship location in Somerville, MA.

Greentown Labs is a community of climate action pioneers working to design a more sustainable world. SWA is excited to be working alongside companies that have the common goal of creating innovative solutions to fight climate change and drive social and environmental justice.

“We’re thrilled to have SWA join the Greentown Labs community,” said Jason Ethier, Greentown Labs’ Senior Director of Membership. “Their focus on energy efficiency and green building certifications, as well as accessibility and inclusive design, align strongly with Greentown’s mission and will offer a valuable perspective for our startup founders who are commercializing climate technology in the buildings sector.”

Throughout SWA’s 50-year history, the firm has worked on numerous high-performance building projects in Boston and the surrounding area. For instance, SWA is providing Passive House consulting services for the mixed-used Winthrop Center tower in downtown Boston—which is on track to be one of the largest Passive House buildings in the world.

“Having been around the Greentown Labs culture as their original design architect, I knew SWA would fit at Greentown Labs,” said Stephen Moore, Senior Building Systems Consultant on SWA’s Passive House team and head of the Boston office. “Great things can happen when we combine what we do at SWA with the mission of Greentown Labs.”

“As the building energy landscape changes rapidly in Massachusetts, our growing team of consultants in the state is looking forward to not only the work ahead, but also helping our new ‘lab-mates’ at Greentown be leaders in those changes,” he said.

SWA joins Greentown Labs as the state of Massachusetts is proposing more stringent requirements for its stretch building energy code adopted by 299 municipalities (including Boston and surrounding communities Brookline, Cambridge, Newton, and Somerville), as well as a new specialized opt-in code option that will require certain multifamily buildings to achieve Passive House certification beginning next year.

The state is working toward a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 85% by 2050 and achieving net-zero emissions.

As a member of Greentown Labs, SWA joins the largest climatetech startup incubator in North America.

Greentown Labs is home to more than 200 startups across its headquarters in Somerville, MA, and a recently opened incubator in Houston, TX, and has supported more than 450 startups since its founding in 2011. Click here to learn more about Greentown Labs.
