Peter Cooper Village & StuyTown (PCVST)2022 Best in Building Health Awards
Beam Living and SWA were recognized by the Center for Active Design (CfAD) in the 2022 Best in Building Health Awards for their work in enhancing human health via the Fitwel Certification System at Peter Cooper Village & StuyTown (PCVST) in New York City. The team received two awards: Most People Impacted Across Site Scorecards and the 2021 Highest Scoring Project for the Community Site v2.1 (Built) Scorecard. See all of the award winners here.
Alafia2022 AIANY Design Award
Alafia, the redevelopment of the Brooklyn Development Center, was recognized by AIA New York with the 2022 Award of Merit for Urban Planning—the only project to win in this category. SWA is providing an array of services for this project, including Passive House certification and verification, energy code commissioning and compliance, and NYSERDA incentive support. Harlem School of the Arts2021 Building Design+Construction Reconstruction Award
The Renaissance Project, the renovation of the Harlem School of the Arts/The Herb Alpert Center, is a Silver Award winner in Building Design+Construction magazine’s 2021 Reconstruction Awards. SWA provided enclosure and curtain wall consulting services for the renovation. The award winners were announced in the November/December issue of BD+C magazine (read the digital edition here).
11 Crown2021 AIA CT Sustainable Architecture Award
SWA Project, 11 Crown, won a Sustainable Architecture Award in the New Construction category from the Connecticut chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The Sustainable Architecture awards recognize projects that decrease green house gases, reduce energy use and demand, and conserve water use in the built or natural environments. SWA project 4697 Third Ave in the Bronx borough of New York City was awarded the Big Apple Brownfield Award for Environmentally Responsible Building from the NYC Brownfield Partnership. Beach Green Dunes II2021 GeoStar Top Job
The New York Geothermal Energy Organization recognized Beach Green Dunes II with the “2021 GeoStar Top Job” award. Beach Green Dunes II is the largest Passive House Certified building in NYC with a geothermal heating and cooling system. Read more about each project and award here.
The Tyler2021 Connecticut Preservation Awards
The Tyler was recognized by Preservation Connecticut with a 2021 Award of Merit. This award recognizes the “grit, sweat, brains, and investment behind the rescue, re-use, or recycling of historic Connecticut places.” Learn more here.
Cooper Park Commons Building 2 Building of Excellence Round 2 Awards
Building 2 of Cooper Park Commons was selected as a $1 million winner in the second round of New York State’s Buildings of Excellence Competition for its high efficiency, low carbon emitting design. The project is also one of five projects awarded a Blue Ribbon for Design Excellence by the Architectural League of New York. SWA was the Passive House consultant for the project. Cornell Tech2021 CISBE Building Performance Awards
SWA Project, The House at Cornell Tech, won the “Project of the Year – Public Use” award from the CISBE Journal at their 2021 Building Performance Awards. CISBE states that the project “most effectively demonstrates high levels of user satisfaction and comfort while delivering outstanding measured building performance. Creating this type of exemplar building is demanding and the BPA recognizes the work and dedication of the team.” SWA served as the sustainability and accessibility consultants for the Cornell Tech project. The AYAAIA DC Chapter Design Awards
The Aya, located in Ward 6 in D.C. is a homeless shelter that can accommodate up to 50 families at once. The project is the Grand Award winner from the AIA D.C. Chapter from their 2020 Chapter Design Awards.
3365 Third Ave2020 NAHB Pillars of the Industry – Best in Green Affordable Multifamily
SWA Project 3365 Third Ave was named NAHB’s “Best in Green Affordable Multifamily Community” award winner. This mixed-use development in the Bronx, with thirty units of affordable rental housing and an Early Development Center, is designed for Passive House and LEED for Homes Multifamily Midrise Platinum. SWA provided sustainability and accessibility consulting to the project.
Karla Butterfield + 3 SWA projects2020 CTGBC Green Building Awards
One of our team members and three of our projects received awards at this year’s Connecticut Green Building Council Awards Ceremony. Karla Butterfield, SWA Sustainability Director, was honored the Judy Swann Green Advocate Award. Three other SWA projects – Beach Green Dunes II, William Boyce Thompson Field House at Phillips Exeter Academy, and Columbus Commons, won the Passive House Category Honor Award, Out-of-State Category Merit Award, and the Multi-Family Residence Category Merit Award, respectively. Grass HouseUSGBC-NCR Responsible Design Award
The National Capital Region chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced that Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) project, Grass House, is the recipient of the Responsible Design Award. SWA provided sustainability consulting, served as the project’s Green Rater, and conducted manual J heating and cooling load calculations to confirm HVAC sizing and proper ventilation.
3365 Third AvenueLEED for Homes Award – Outstanding Affordable Project
The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced that Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) project, 3365 Third Avenue, is a LEED Homes Award winner in the Outstanding Affordable Project category. SWA provided certification consulting, as well as several other services for this laudable residential development project.
Star Garment Innovation CenterAIA 2020 Design Award – Sustainability
SWA served as energy consultants for the Star Garment Innovation Center. This project, which is the first Passive House in Sri Lanka, was awarded by the AIA New York chapter for it’s “design quality, response to its context and community, program resolution, innovation, thoughtfulness, and technique.”

A total of seven SWA projects were awarded during round 1 of NYSERDA’s Buildings of Excellence Awards. The Buildings of Excellence competition, administered by The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), incentivizes innovative multifamily projects that aim to achieve near- to net-zero carbon emissions through design, construction, and operation.
