4697 Third Avenue & Betances Residence

The Society of American Registered Architects New York Council (SARA NY) recognized Betances Residence, located at 445 E 142nd Street in the Bronx, with a Design Award of Excellence and 4697 Third Avenue in the Bronx with a Design Award of Merit. AIANYS 2023 Excelsior Award

Houghton Hall at SUNY Fredonia

AIA New York State recognized Houghton Hall at SUNY Fredonia with a Merit Award in the Renovation/Addition category of its 2023 Excelsior Awards program. This renovation project transformed an unused campus building designed by I.M. Pei and Partners into a LEED Silver science facility. 2023 Connecticut Preservation Award 

Hotel Marcel

Preservation Connecticut recognized Hotel Marcel in New Haven, CT, with an Award of Merit in the 2023 Connecticut Preservation Awards, which honors projects, long-term contributions, and professional achievements that demonstrate the many ways historic places contribute to the life and vitality of Connecticut communities. 2023 ICC National Leadership in Sustainability and Energy Efficiency Award

Gayathri Vijayakumar, Principal Mechanical Engineer at SWA

The International Code Council’s Sustainability Membership Council recognized SWA’s Gayathri Vijayakumar with the 2023 National Leadership in Sustainability and Energy Efficiency Award. The Governing Committee of the Sustainability Membership Council selected Gayathri for her “dedication to building consensus in developing the 2024 International Energy Conservation Code, ultimately helping achieve global net-zero energy and decarbonization goals.” Learn more about the Code Council awards program here.

Buildings of Excellence Round Three

Brownsville Arts Center and Apartments

The Buildings of Excellence Competition administered by NYSERDA recognizes clean, resilient, and low-carbon and carbon-neutral multifamily buildings. SWA is proud to be part of the project teams for two Buildings of Excellence Round Three winners: 439 West 36th Street and 489-501 9th Avenue; and Brownsville Arts Center and Apartments. SWA is the Passive House consultant for 439 West 36th Street and 489-501 9th Avenue. The firm is also the ENERGY STAR, Fitwel, Indoor airPLUS, LEED, and Passive House certification consultant for Brownsville Arts Center and Apartments. Buildings of Excellence Early-Stage Design Support

Three Arts 

Three Arts was recognized in the Early-Stage Design Support component of the Buildings of Excellence Competition administered by NYSERDA. SWA is proud to be the Passive House consultant for the project. Learn more about Early-Stage Design Support here.

ACEC New York 2023 Engineering Excellence Award

425 Grand Concourse

The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of New York recognized 425 Grand Concourse and its mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineer, Dagher Engineering, with a Diamond award for Building/Technology Systems in the 2023 Engineering Excellence Awards. 2022

NAHB 2022 Multifamily Pillars of the Industry Award

The Carolina 

The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) recognized The Carolina in New York City as the Best Affordable Apartment Community (Over 100 Units) in its Multifamily Pillars of the Industry Awards. SWA provided services including Enterprise Green Communities certification, energy modeling, and commissioning for the project. Learn more about the awards program here.

2022 New York State Historic Preservation Award

T Building

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation recognized the T Building in Queens, NY, in the 2022 Historic Preservation Awards. SWA was part of the team for this adaptive reuse project, which converted a former hospital into supportive housing and space for community services. Learn about all the winning projects here.

CTGBC 2022 Green Building Awards

Hotel Marcel & Willow Creek Phase III

The CT Green Building Council recognizes excellence in green building design, construction, and operations through its annual Green Building Awards program. The 2022 winners included Award of Excellence recipient Hotel Marcel and Energy Residential Award of Honor winner Willow Creek Phase III. SWA is proud to be part of the team for these two projects. 2022 Phius Passive Projects Design Competition Awards

425 Grand Concourse, 4697 Third Avenue & Willow Creek Rentals

The eighth annual Phius Passive Projects Design Competition recognized the best of the best in passive design. SWA worked on three of the award-winning projects: 425 Grand Concourse earned the High-Rise Multifamily and Best Overall Project awards, 4697 Third Avenue received the High-Rise Multifamily Honorable Mention; and Willow Creek Rentals won the Community Development Recognition award. 2022 AEE International Energy Professional Development Award

Adam Romano, Senior Building Systems Consultant at SWA 

The Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) recognized SWA’s Adam Romano with the 2022 AEE International Award for Energy Professional Development. This awards program identifies those who exemplify the very best in their fields. Adam has developed and delivered customized operations and maintenance training to over 3,500 operators. Peter Cooper Village & StuyTown (PCVST)

Beam Living and SWA were recognized by the Center for Active Design (CfAD) in the 2022 Best in Building Health Awards for their work in enhancing human health via the Fitwel Certification System at Peter Cooper Village & StuyTown (PCVST) in New York City. The team received two awards: Most People Impacted Across Site Scorecards and the 2021 Highest Scoring Project for the Community Site v2.1 (Built) Scorecard. See all of the award winners here.

2022 AIANY Design Award

Alafia

Alafia, the redevelopment of the Brooklyn Development Center, was recognized by AIA New York with the 2022 Award of Merit for Urban Planning—the only project to win in this category. SWA is providing an array of services for this project, including Passive House certification and verification, energy code commissioning and compliance, and NYSERDA incentive support. 2021

2021 Building Design+Construction Reconstruction Award

Harlem School of the Arts

The Renaissance Project, the renovation of the Harlem School of the Arts/The Herb Alpert Center, is a Silver Award winner in Building Design+Construction magazine’s 2021 Reconstruction Awards. SWA provided enclosure and curtain wall consulting services for the renovation. The award winners were announced in the November/December issue of BD+C magazine (read the digital edition here).

2021 AIA CT Sustainable Architecture Award

11 Crown

SWA Project, 11 Crown, won a Sustainable Architecture Award in the New Construction category from the Connecticut chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The Sustainable Architecture awards recognize projects that decrease green house gases, reduce energy use and demand, and conserve water use in the built or natural environments. Big Apple Brownfield Award

4697 Third Ave

SWA project 4697 Third Ave in the Bronx borough of New York City was awarded the Big Apple Brownfield Award for Environmentally Responsible Building from the NYC Brownfield Partnership. In addition to being a brownfield recovery project, 4697 Third Ave is designed and constructed to meet Passive House standards. Read more about each project and award here.

2021 GeoStar Top Job

Beach Green Dunes II

The New York Geothermal Energy Organization recognized Beach Green Dunes II with the “2021 GeoStar Top Job” award. Beach Green Dunes II is the largest Passive House Certified building in NYC with a geothermal heating and cooling system. Read more about each project and award here.

2021 Connecticut Preservation Awards

The Tyler

The Tyler was recognized by Preservation Connecticut with a 2021 Award of Merit. This award recognizes the “grit, sweat, brains, and investment behind the rescue, re-use, or recycling of historic Connecticut places.” Learn more here.

Buildings of Excellence Round Two

Cooper Park Commons Building 2 

Building 2 of Cooper Park Commons was selected as a $1 million winner in the second round of New York State’s Buildings of Excellence Competition for its high efficiency, low carbon emitting design. The project is also one of five projects awarded a Blue Ribbon for Design Excellence by the Architectural League of New York. SWA was the Passive House consultant for the project. 2021 CISBE Building Performance Awards

Cornell Tech

SWA Project, The House at Cornell Tech, won the “Project of the Year – Public Use” award from the CISBE Journal at their 2021 Building Performance Awards. CISBE states that the project “most effectively demonstrates high levels of user satisfaction and comfort while delivering outstanding measured building performance. Creating this type of exemplar building is demanding and the BPA recognizes the work and dedication of the team.” SWA served as the sustainability and accessibility consultants for the Cornell Tech project. 2020

AIA DC Chapter Design Awards

The AYA

The Aya, located in Ward 6 in D.C. is a homeless shelter that can accommodate up to 50 families at once. The project is the Grand Award winner from the AIA D.C. Chapter from their 2020 Chapter Design Awards.

2020 NAHB Pillars of the Industry – Best in Green Affordable Multifamily

3365 Third Ave

SWA Project 3365 Third Ave was named NAHB’s “Best in Green Affordable Multifamily Community” award winner.  This mixed-use development in the Bronx, with thirty units of affordable rental housing and an Early Development Center, is designed for Passive House and LEED for Homes Multifamily Midrise Platinum. SWA provided sustainability and accessibility consulting to the project.

2020 CTGBC Green Building Awards

Karla Butterfield + 3 SWA projects

One of our team members and three of our projects received awards at this year’s Connecticut Green Building Council Awards Ceremony. Karla Butterfield, SWA Sustainability Director, was honored the Judy Swann Green Advocate Award. Three other SWA projects – Beach Green Dunes II, William Boyce Thompson Field House at Phillips Exeter Academy, and Columbus Commons, won the Passive House Category Honor Award, Out-of-State Category Merit Award, and the Multi-Family Residence Category Merit Award, respectively. The Tyler is the overall winner in Affordable Housing Finance’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards for the nation’s top developments of 2019 and 2020.

USGBC-NCR Responsible Design Award

Grass House

The National Capital Region chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced that Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) project, Grass House, is the recipient of the Responsible Design Award. SWA provided sustainability consulting, served as the project’s Green Rater, and conducted manual J heating and cooling load calculations to confirm HVAC sizing and proper ventilation.

LEED for Homes Award – Outstanding Affordable Project

3365 Third Avenue

The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced that Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) project, 3365 Third Avenue, is a LEED Homes Award winner in the Outstanding Affordable Project category. SWA provided certification consulting, as well as several other services for this laudable residential development project.

AIA 2020 Design Award – Sustainability

Star Garment Innovation Center

SWA served as energy consultants for the Star Garment Innovation Center. This project, which is the first Passive House in Sri Lanka, was awarded by the AIA New York chapter for it’s “design quality, response to its context and community, program resolution, innovation, thoughtfulness, and technique.”

A total of seven SWA projects were awarded during round 1 of NYSERDA’s Buildings of Excellence Awards. The Buildings of Excellence competition, administered by The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), incentivizes innovative multifamily projects that aim to achieve near- to net-zero carbon emissions through design, construction, and operation.
