USGBC Announces Recipients of their 2017 LEED Homes Awards

LEED Homes Awards logoOn September 12, the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) announced the winners of their annual LEED Homes Awards. The awards recognize innovative projects, architects, developers, and homebuilders who lead the residential market in sustainable development.

Recipients include multi-family, single-family, and affordable housing projects, as well as companies that are trailblazers in the residential sector. These companies have made it a priority to incorporate sustainability within their projects in 2016.

“Homes provide more than just shelter. As demonstrated by the slate of LEED Homes Award recipients, LEED homes improve the health and wellbeing of the occupants while saving energy, environmental resources and money,” said Mahesh Ramanujam, president and CEO, USGBC. “This year we praise the innovative and integrative LEED Homes’ honorees for advancing the residential green building movement.”

The awards also recognize “LEED Homes Power Builders”, which honors an elite group of developers and builders that have exhibited an outstanding commitment to LEED and the green building movement within the residential sector. To be considered as a LEED Homes Power Builder, developers and builders must have certified 90 percent of their homes/units built in 2016 through the LEED Homes program. Homes at any LEED certification level (Certified, Silver, Gold, or Platinum) are eligible for consideration.

Prospect Plaza Site One, the recipient of the Outstanding Affordable Project Award, is part of a multi-phase project being constructed by developer Les Bluestone and Blue Sea Development. SWA has been working with Les Bluestone and Blue Sea Development for several years to pilot guidelines for improved housing developments across New York City. Prospect Plaza Site One was the first of its kind in the nation to have successfully met the Partnership for a Healthier America’s criteria of Active Design Verified (ADV), a program that identifies leaders in affordable housing who make health a priority in how they build communities. With SWA’s guidance, Site One received LEED Platinum certification, National Green Building Standard, and incentives under the NYSERDA Multifamily Performance Program for 110 affordable units.
