Selecting Ventilation Systems for Homes

Course Description: There is no ideal ventilation system; each system has its advantages and disadvantages. This session will explore the fundamental concepts of whole-building, residential ventilation systems starting with a review of the needs for ventilation and the applicable codes and standards. The pros and cons of each system type will be considered in some detail, particularly with respect to first cost, energy performance, indoor air quality, installation issues, and maintenance needs. Case studies and results from research projects conducted across the country will be presented to support the concepts discussed.

Learning Objectives:

    Understand the purpose and need for ventilation in homes.
    Understand the basic operation of the main types of whole-building residential ventilation systems.
    With the help of case studies and research results, appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of various systems with respect to cost, IAQ impacts, energy, maintenance, and installation requirements.
    Make informed decisions when selecting home ventilation systems taking into account project goals, budgets, interactions with other building systems, etc.
