Karla Butterfield Named NGBS Green Master Verifier™

Home Innovation Research Labs recently created a new designation to recognize green building professionals who have demonstrated advanced knowledge and extensive experience as National Green Building Standard™ (NGBS) Verifiers. Having certified over 1470 units of multifamily space using the NGBS system, Steven Winter Associates’ Karla Butterfield is among the industry’s first to receive the title of NGBS Green Master Verifier™. Karla’s guidance assures project teams satisfy mandatory performance provisions outlined by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) approved green building rating system, along with identifying and implementing green practices in line with the project’s target NGBS certification level.

The NGBS program is designed to rate the performance of single-family homes or multifamily properties in six important categories: Site Design, Resource Efficiency, Water Efficiency, Energy Efficiency, Indoor Environmental Quality, and Building Operation & Maintenance. The program also has a path to certification for new land development or remodeling projects and provides resources to help individuals make informed decisions when choosing materials, finishes, and mechanical systems.

As the sustainability consultant and certification specialist, Karla Butterfield recently led CT’s Loom City Lofts to meet ambitious sustainability and energy efficiency objectives inline with NGBS Gold certification standards. A former textile mill, this mixed use full-gut rehab project posed unique challenges for a project team bound by strict historic preservation guidelines. Remodeling according to the requirements of NGBS, Loom City Lofts achieved deep energy savings without compromising historic value by utilizing non-permanent insulation and custom milled low-e window glass to avoid building façade alterations.
