CAMBA Gardens and Coney Island Commons Honored at 2014 Building Brooklyn Awards

AUGUST 01, 2014

Steven Winter Associates, Inc.(SWA) is pleased to announce the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce selected two of the firm’s recent multifamily projects, CAMBA Gardens and Coney Island Commons, to receive a Building Brooklyn Award. The 14th Annual Building Brooklyn Awards™ ceremony took place on the evening of July 23, 2014 at the Williamsburg Savings bank in Brooklyn, New York.

CAMBA Gardens
Developed by CAMBA Housing Ventures, Inc. (CHV), CAMBA Gardens is a 209-unit, transit-oriented, affordable and supportive housing development on the Kings County Hospital Center (KCHC) campus in Wingate, Brooklyn. CAMBA Gardens received the top honor in the residential affordable category for its outstanding performance in residential construction. The two-building development achieved LEED® for Homes™ Platinum, Enterprise Green Communities Certification and an ENERGY STAR® certification. SWA worked closely with CHV and architect, Harden Van Arnam, to provide sustainability and energy consulting services. The development offers affordable and supportive rental housing for households earning less than 60% of the area median income (AMI).

Completed in October 2013, CAMBA Gardens represents a new national model for partnerships between public hospitals, non-profit developers, social service providers, and community stakeholders. It reused underutilized surplus hospital property, which provided revenue for KCHC and New York City’s Health and Hospitals Corporation while providing tenants with access to high-quality preventative healthcare at KCHC. CAMBA Gardens was able to earn LEED Platinum Certification, the highest certification level, due to exemplary performance in energy efficiency, water conservation, and superior indoor air quality, among other areas.

Coney Island Commons
Coney Island Commons (CIC), a mixed-use complex with 195 affordable housing units, received an award in recognition of its community development. SWA worked with owners and developers, The Kretchmer Companies LLC, ELH Mgmt. LLC, and Galaxy General Contracting Corp., and architect, Dattner Architects, to obtain incentives through the NYSERDA Multifamily Performance Program (MPP). CIC was developed in collaboration with and using subsidy from the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development.
CIC contains an on-site YMCA that includes an aquatic center, a full court gymnasium, fitness and multi-purpose rooms. The project, which achieved certification through Enterprise Green Communities, incorporates strategies to conserve energy and promote healthy living including green roofs planted with natural grasses and native wildflowers.

Building Brooklyn Awards
This is the third consecutive year SWA projects have received a Building Brooklyn Award. Liberty Apartments and Third + Bond were recognized in 2012 and the Hegeman Residence received an award in 2013 in honor of its contributions in the affordable housing sector.

The Building Brooklyn Awards™ recognize recently completed new construction and renovation projects that enrich Brooklyn’s neighborhoods and economy. The judging committee is comprised of architects, planners, government officials, economic development experts, and business leaders. Buildings honored represent a wide range of project types, budgets, and neighborhoods.
