Balancing Act: Case Study of a LEED Home Retrofit
Description:
This occupied retrofit case study illustrates how bit by bit, homeowners transformed a 100-year old home from a HERS Index 173 resource hog into a svelte HERS 59 LEED v4 Platinum residence with emphasis on improved indoor air quality. Managing Director of Sustainable Housing Services at Steven Winter Associates, Inc., Maureen Mahle presents the 5-year retrofit of her own 1915 home, culminating in LEED v4 Platinum certification in March 2018.
This case study highlights the tough choices and tradeoffs when energy, indoor air quality, and existing building constraints intersect. The session includes building performance test results and a full 5 years of utility data pegged to each major building system upgrade. Maureen will present a sustainability professional’s top triumphs and regrets in the quest for a green and healthy home.
