Columbus Commons – Remediated Brownfield PHIUS+ Certified
Energy Star v3.1
Zero Energy Ready Homes
CT Residential New Construction Initiatives
The Columbus Commons development will be constructed in two phases. When completed, it will consist of two six -story buildings containing 160 residential mixed-income units and 20,000 SF of ground-level retail space. The buildings will provide apartments that are highly efficient, have improved indoor environments, and are close to the community resources of downtown New Britain. Columbus Commons is very transit-oriented, being across the street from the CTfastrak, where express buses run between Hartford and New Britain as often as every 7 minutes.
Previously located on this site was a police station, and the City of New Britain completed environmental remediation of the site through the CT Department of Economic and Community Developments Targeted Brownfield Remediation Funding.
The project is pursuing PHIUS+ certification which incorporates the DOE Zero Energy Ready Homes program, Energy Star v3.1 and Indoor airPLUS.
Steven Winter Associates provided Passive House field verification for this project.
