Three Steven Winter Associates Projects Earn US DOE Housing Innovation Awards

August 10, 2016

The US Department of Energy has announced that Paul Torcellini, Revival Homes, and AquaZephyr have received 2016 Housing Innovation Awards in the Custom (for Buyer) and Multifamily categories, respectively. Grand Winners in each category will be announced at the 2016 Housing Innovation Awards Ceremony, Wednesday, September 27, at the EEBA Excellence in Building Conference in Dallas, Texas.

Torcellini Zero Energy Home
The Torcellini Residence, a three-bedroom 1920’s bungalow style home, is designed to emphasize durability, reduce consumption, and improve indoor air quality (IAQ). Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) acted as the HERS Rater and provided ENERGY STAR® v3.1, Indoor airPLUS™, and the DOE Zero Energy Ready Homes certification support. Relying on passive design, the home’s orientation maximizes solar gain during cold months, while generous overhangs provide summer shading. This project was also a winner in this year’s CT Zero Energy Challenge.

Eco Village Sustainable Living CenterThe Third Residential EcoVillage Experience (TREE) project has 25 single-family homes and a new 15-unit multifamily building, known as the Sustainable Living Center. This new residential building received ENERGY STAR v3.1, DOE Zero Energy Ready Home and Indoor airPLUS labels. SWA provided sustainability consulting and certification services for the aforementioned programs as well as LEED for Homes, and Passive House Institute US (PHIUS).

SWA was the provider and rater for the ENERGY STAR, Indoor airPLUS, and DOE Zero Energy Ready Home certifications for this three bedroom, 1,379 SF home. With multiple energy saving methods in place, this home has projected annual energy cost savings of up to $3,862 and was built at a very affordable $135/sf.

“These winners are leading the movement to Zero Energy Ready Homes that provide better places for Americans to live, stronger communities, and a more economically and environmentally resilient nation,” said Sam Rashkin, Chief Architect at the USDOE Building Technologies Office.

Since the inception of the Home Innovation Awards in 2013, SWA has worked on multiple winning projects each year including The Taft School Residence in Watertown, CT (2015 winner), the Trolle Residence in Danbury, CT (2014 winner), and the Performance House in Old Greenwich, CT (2013 winner).
