Question 1: 00:06 What is your favorite part of your job?
Jeff : 00:09 My job allows me to use the creative and technical aspects of my brain to solve problems. Some of the problems that we have can be quite complicated, and I really enjoy the process of trying to figure them out to find a solution.
Peg: 00:23 I love my job. And the reason I love my job is because I get to have a larger impact on the community.
Carlos : 00:30 So aside from my coworkers, and I’m not blowing smoke- I work with awesome people, my favorite part of the job is field work and inspections. This is when you get your hands dirty, it’s when you see projects go from a drawing to something a little bit more tangible. It’s when you get to interact most with the clients and the project team to ensure that the project is built properly.
Question 2: 00:56 What did you know about accessibility before working at SWA vs. now?
Jennifer : 01:01 the signs with the person in the wheelchair- which I learned is the international symbol for accessibility, and the parking spaces that you can’t park in unless you have a pass. That’s the extent of accessibility that I knew about. And now that I’ve been in the field for five years, I have learned so much and it has transformed the way I see the world.
David: 01:31 Well, to be honest, I actually didn’t know much. You see people in wheelchairs and you see people in your family that need help, but you don’t actually realize that there is a field that actually is dedicated to helping them. So now that I’ve been here a while, I realize that there’s so many little things that can make a person’s life more difficult or easier. I’m thankful that I’m actually part of the side that makes their lives easier.
Question 3: 01:59 What has been your favorite project you’ve worked on?
Theresa: 02:02 I got the chance to work on a residential building in New York city that was designed by a very high profile architect. I’d actually studied some designs by that firm while I was in architecture school, so it was a really great experience to be able to work on a challenging design and have a positive impact by making sure that it was going to be usable for people with disabilities.
Jennifer: 02:23 I have so many! One that comes to mind is this multi-phase MRI project. We work with one of the largest health care systems in the country and in a place like New York City, you’re rarely building a hospital from the ground up. So you’re working on this project, and the hospital is fully operational except for that segment that’s going to be transformed. So this is one of my favorite projects because of how incredible it was when the pieces all came together.
Question 4: 03:04 Would you say your work is impactful?
David: 03:08 Would I say the work is impactful? Well yeah. One of the things that we heard from a customer about a client and that was in a wheelchair, they went into one of the rooms that we re-mediated and they were just so happy and so thrilled because they actually had a room that they can use.
Jeff : 03:24 I think that anytime you can have a direct impact on someone else in a positive way, it’s going to be rewarding. Our job quite simply is to improve the everyday lives of others. I think that it’s a noble effort and it’s something I’m very proud to be a part of.

The Position and Team:
The Accessibility Consulting Team at Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) is looking for an Accessibility Specialist. This team is a proven leader in helping clients create buildings that are in compliance with regulatory requirements for accessible design and construction. Our mission is to provide consistently exceptional and reliable solutions-driven accessibility consulting with the goal of exceeding the expectations of our business partners and transforming their approach to development and acquisitions.
SWA has worked diligently with private and public sector clients in a range of capacities to help promote the goal of accessible design regulated by building codes and federal, state, and local laws.
This position reports to the Senior Accessibility Consultant.

The Accessibility Specialist under the direction of a Senior Consultant will:
1. Participate independently in all phases of the firm’s accessibility-related business sector, including the review of design plans, specifications and product submittals; field inspections and existing building audits; technical assistance and consulting during project development, design and construction; remediation plans and cost estimates; litigation consulting; and training.
2. Become proficient in highly specialized regulations, codes, standards, and other relevant criteria:
- accessibility regulations, including the Americans with Disabilities Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Fair Housing Amendments Act, and other state and local regulations;
- accessibility requirements of the building code, including the International Building Code and other state and local codes;
- accessibility standards and guidelines, including the 2010 Standards for Accessible Design, the Uniform Federal Accessibility Standards, ANSI A117.1, and others.
3. Investigate, analyze, and respond to technical inquiries concerning accessibility issues.
4. Research and maintain databases of current products, codes, and standards related to accessibility.
5. Participate in meetings with project teams.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Below is a list of the minimum requirements for the position.
Required industry knowledge, and skills
- Bachelor of Architecture, BS in Architecture, BS in Architectural Technology, or
- BS in an unrelated field and a minimum of two years of work experience in the field of Code review or Accessibility Consulting with demonstrated experience in conducting plan reviews and field inspections.
- Demonstrated command of navigating plan documents from schematic design and design development through construction documents required.
- Ability to communicate highly specialized and technical information to a variety of audiences, in writing and verbally.
- A writing sample is required to be submitted as part of the application process
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Programs (in order of importance Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).
Preferred knowledge, and skills
- CAD experience is preferred
- Adobe InDesign experience is preferred

When in the field the employee must frequently lift or move objects up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move objects up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and ability to adjust focus.
Minimum overnight travel is anticipated for this position. Local day travel is required (anticipated at up to 30% during some weeks). A valid and clean driving license is required.
This is an office based position. Most work is performed in an office environment. Regular field work which will involve trips to projects sites for observation and training is required.
