Improving the Built Environment through Research, Design, and Technology

What is LEED?

LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, the U.S. Green Building Council’s (www.usgbc.org) voluntary rating standard for green buildings.

The LEED Green Building Rating System™ is a nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED can be applied to every building type and phase of a building life cycle, whether it is for new construction or renovation projects.

There are currently LEED rating systems for Multiple Buildings and On-Campus Building Projects, Existing Building Operations and Maintenance, Commercial Interiors, Core and Shell development projects, Homes, Neighborhood Developments, Schools, and Retail projects.
