Improving the Built Environment through Research, Design, and Technology

Research, Development & Demonstration

What distinguishes Steven Winter Associates from other firms is our contribution to building science through our research and development. Since 1972, SWA has developed solutions for some of the toughest problems related to energy and sustainability by designing cutting edge, market-focused products and technologies for a wide range of private sector builders, federal and state agencies, and industry trade associations, utility companies, insurance groups and regulators.

Residential research efforts focus on new and emerging building technologies that improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of America’s housing stock. Recent research efforts include panelized construction systems, renewable energy systems, strategies for improved ventilation of single family and multi-family housing, and development of hurricane-resistant homes. SWA has also worked with the country’s top manufacturers of building materials to develop and evaluate new and emerging technologies and products. Data collection and performance testing are critical elements of the company’s research efforts.

SWA is the lead member of the Consortium for Advanced Residential Buildings (CARB), supported by the U.S. Department of Energy under the Building America Initiative.

The firm is also under contract to HUD to conduct research under its Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH) program.

For federal agencies, SWA’s experience and technical expertise in energy and sustainability enables us to respond quickly and efficiently to their often complex needs, while delivering added value for the government’s research dollar.

Our private sector clients benefit from our real-world knowledge and expertise that emphasizes a more comprehensive whole building approach to their needs, often with results that improve performance and reduce bottom line costs.
