Improving the Built Environment through Research, Design, and Technology

Prototypes and Demonstration Homes

Demonstration buildings are important aspects of SWA’s work with the Consortium for Advanced Residential Buildings (CARB), part of the U.S. Dept. of Energy’s Building America program (www.carb-swa.com), and its work under the U.S. Dept. of Housing & Urban Development’s Partnership for Advancing Technology in Housing (PATH) program. These range from suburban production builder homes equipped with advanced products and systems, to multi-story and multi-family in-fill homes built in the heart of the city. SWA works with many non-profit organizations, including Habitat for Humanity, in addition to production builders, non-profit housing sponsors, and remodelers of all sizes.

Frequently, SWA monitors these demonstration buildings to measure energy-related characteristics, helping the builder or developer to assess the value of the innovative products and systems demonstrated. The goal is broader adoption of the technologies. To this end, these demonstration projects are widely published.
