Founded in 1972, Steven Winter Associates, Inc. (SWA) has a long-standing commitment to creating energy-efficient, cost-saving, and resource-conserving buildings that contribute to improved human and ecosystem health. As consultants on the built environment, SWA works closely with architects, developers, builders, and local, state, and federal agencies to develop and apply sustainable, ‘whole building’ strategies in a wide variety of building types: residential, multifamily, commercial, educational, and institutional.

SWA offers consulting services to analyze and improve energy performance, indoor environmental quality, and sustainability for a variety of building types across the country. Computer simulations, on-site performance testing, and builder or operator training are some of the tools used by SWA staff to assist clients in achieving project goals for high performance buildings. SWA staff works with a variety of green building standards, including the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards. Steven Winter, company founder and President, is the past chairman of the US Green Building Council and current Chair of the LEED for Homes Committee. The company consults on numerous LEED projects and assists clients in obtaining certification under a variety of USGBC rating systems.

SWA has also worked with developers and communities to create customized green building standards designed specifically to address local ecosystems, climate, and culture. SWA supports the Sustainable Building Industry Council’s Whole Building Design Guide, an online resource for applying the integrated design approach to create successful high performance buildings. Interrelationships between all elements of a building, from water and energy efficiency to safety and security, are explored in the ‘whole building’ perspective. SWA’s architects practice this approach to develop specialized green design solutions for unique architecture projects.
