Improving the Built Environment through Research, Design, and Technology

LEED for Homes

LEED for Homes is a voluntary rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) that promotes the design and construction of high performance "green" homes. A green home uses less energy, water, and natural resources; creates less waste; and is healthier and more comfortable for its occupants.

Steven Winter Associates, Inc. is a LEED for Homes Provider, offering technical, marketing and verification support to builders and project teams. SWA operates in New York and Connecticut, and has registered projects in Maryland, Washington, D.C., Northern Virginia, Western Florida and elsewhere.

The LEED for Homes program encompasses not only single-family homes, but also attached housing and mid-rise (up to 6 stories) multifamily condominiums and rental housing. New construction projects and substantial "gut" rehab projects are both appropriate candidates. LEED for Homes is a whole-building rating system and cannot be applied to individual apartments within a building. The rating system can be used on mixed use buildings that contain at least 50% residential space.

More details and copies of the LEED for Homes Checklist and accompanying Rating System can be found on the USGBC's LEED for Homes webpage. You can also email LEED4Homes@swinter.com.
