Federal Network for Sustainability

Developing Partnerships: Conceptualizing and Supporting the Federal Network for Sustainability (FNS)

SWA staff supported the activities of the FNS between 1999 and 2003. FNS was a revolutionary, voluntary, informal network of ten federal agencies on the west coast. It was formed to help the agencies meet the requirements found in the suite of executive orders known as “Greening the Government.”

The agencies leveraged resources, knowledge and skills across mission boundaries to advance five initiatives: Green Buildings, Electronic Products Stewardship, Greener Copier Paper, Green Power Purchases, and implementation of Environmental Management Systems. SWA work included staffing working groups, developing Frequently Asked Questions documents for the initiatives, organizing annual meetings, preparing Annual Reports, developing submissions for the “Closing the Circle” Award Program and developing the website.
