SWA’s Whole Building Approach to Design

Steven Winter Associates' offices located in Norwalk, CT, New York City, Boston, MA and Washington, DC are staffed by architects, planners, engineers, builders, building and computer scientists, and educators who undertake design, MEP design, LEED certification, research, material/systems testing, accessibility compliance, and other technical assignments for a wide variety of public and private clients.

We encourage extensive cross-disciplinary training of our professionals which allows SWA to design and evaluate projects using an integrated and “whole building” approach. We apply innovative construction technologies that incorporate energy conservation; accessibility; hazards research; universal design and sustainability in buildings. As a result, SWA’s projects exhibit distinctive yet cost-effective design, high energy savings, superior building performance, increased occupant comfort, and reduced negative environmental impact.

In addition to our design and research activities, SWA conducts workshops for architects, builders, and contractors on topics such as “sustainable design”, advanced building systems and equipment, value engineering, accessibility, and efficient construction practices aimed at improved building performance and resource efficiency.

Technical Research and Design Clients

SWA’s technical expertise was developed in hundreds of design and research assignments completed over many years for the private sector and builders (US Home, Ryland, Toll Brothers, Pulte, and Centex), home manufacturers (Champion, Muncy, Ritz-Craft, and Fleetwood) and modular/panelized housing producers (Westchester, Ritz-Craft, Avis Homes, Chelsea Homes, Unibilt, Simplex). This work has been in parallel with research completed for suppliers to these builder categories – Dow, Owens Corning, Andersen, Monsanto, Georgia-Pacific, Celotex, Weyerhaeuser, US Steel, as well as industry trade associations, utility companies, insurance groups, regulators and others.
