New York City Office

Our New York City office brings SWA back to where we began--in the Big Apple. New York has some of the most diverse buildings in the country, and not surprisingly, many of them need to perform better.

Our staff has developed a particular expertise in helping our clients to develop energy efficiency strategies for a wide range of building types, particularly for large and small multifamily and commercial buildings. We also help our clients to achieve LEED® certification in new construction or retrofit buildings.

Our client base includes building owners, developers, architects and engineers, as well as City, State, and Federal agencies with programs that encourage more energy efficient building practices. Some of our projects include well-known, sustainable buildings, such as Battery Park City, the Solaire, 4 Times Square, AOL/Time Warner and Hearst Headquarters. SWA clients are located throughout NYC and the Northeast. SWA also works closely with local community-based housing agencies, helping them to access the financial incentives offered by New York State in order for them to pursue solutions to their building needs.

Washington, DC Office

For two decades, Steven Winter Associates’ Washington, D.C. office (SWA/DC) has been providing consulting, training, and technical assistance to professionals throughout the buildings industry. The staff has worked closely with both the private sector and key federal agencies (the U.S. General Services Administration, the Naval Facilities Command, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the U.S. Department of Energy) to support a wide variety of building science research, policy and standards development and capacity building activities. Our topical areas of expertise include sustainability/green design, accessibility, security, affordability, acoustical considerations and cost analysis, which are applicable to single-family residential, multi-family mixed use, commercial and institutional buildings.

SWA/DC continues after 18 years to manage the day-to-day operations of the Sustainable Buildings Industry Council (SBIC). In this capacity, working with the members of the association SWA staff has contributed to such key SBIC projects as the conception and development of “Designing Low-Energy Buildings with ENERGY-10 software”, the Whole Building Design Guide website (www.WBDG.org), on-line sustainability training, the “Passive Solar Guidelines for Home Building,” and the High Performance School Buildings Resource and Strategy Guide and online training.

SWA/DC, in coordination with SWA offices in Connecticut and New York, provides LEED consulting and certification services for commercial buildings and for multifamily housing and mixed use developments.

The office uses an integrated approach for all our projects whether they are modest or complex.
